Determining the Right Air Conditioning Installation for Your Home

The official start of summer is quickly approaching, but the heat of summer is already here. Now, it’s more important than ever to have a properly functioning air conditioner so you don’t waste potentially hundreds of dollars on your electric bill. If your AC isn’t running like it used to, it may be time to invest in a new unit. So, where do you start when it comes to AC installation? The first step is determining what type of air conditioning system you need. Hometech Builders would like to share some insight on a few key things to keep in mind when exploring your options.

Types of Air Conditioning Units to Consider

There are two main types of systems to consider: a central air conditioner or a ductless air conditioner (also known as a mini split.) The two systems have similarities, they both have a component indoors and outdoors. The indoor component captures the heat in your home and transfers it to the outdoor component, releasing it into the air outside. They have a few key differences however.

Central Air Conditioners: Send cool air through your duct work and carry it throughout your home to cool the entire space. They use an air handler on your furnace to transfer cool air.

Ductless or Mini Split Air Conditioners: These are a newer technology that use an outdoor condenser and indoor fan unit to cool your home or business. They use a cable to transfer air. They don’t require duct work or floor vents.

Factors to Consider When Buying a New AC Unit

When considering what type of system you need, look at your space and budget. Already have duct work in your home? A central air conditioner can be a seamless switch. However, a mini air split air conditioner may be a better choice if you don’t have existing duct work. When looking at cost, a central air conditioner is typically more affordable upfront, although a ductless system can be more efficient, saving you money in the long run. When it comes to appearances, a central air conditioner isn’t as noticeable in a home. A ductless system does require a vent in the ceiling or small unit on the wall to function. Depending on whether or not you want to see your air conditioner one may be a better choice than the other.
